Passport Stamps, New Places & the Little Joy of a Hotel Welcome Gift

I have a problem.

I want to go everywhere.

The more I travel, the longer my list seems to become. You would think checking destinations off the bucket list would make it shorter, but somehow the exact opposite happens. One beautiful place introduces you to another. One incredible meal makes you curious about an entirely different region. You meet someone who tells you about a tiny town you've never heard of, see a photograph of a hotel perched on the edge of a mountain, or stumble across an island you suddenly need to know more about.

And that's when you realize something slightly heartbreaking:

There simply isn't enough time in one lifetime to see everything this world has to offer.

There are ancient cities to wander through, turquoise oceans to swim in, mountains to climb—or admire comfortably from a balcony with a glass of wine—markets to explore, food to taste, cultures to experience and sunsets to watch from places you haven't even heard of yet.

How are we supposed to fit all of that into one life?

I intend to give it my best effort.

But Can We Talk About Hotel Welcome Gifts?

Among all this grand talk about seeing the world, experiencing different cultures and collecting once-in-a-lifetime memories, I have a confession to make.

I get ridiculously excited about hotel welcome gifts.

There. I said it.

You can place me in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and I will absolutely be excited about the architecture, history and adventure waiting outside my door.

But first...

What's in the box on the table?

There's just something wonderfully indulgent about walking into a hotel room after a long travel day and discovering that someone has left a little surprise waiting for you.

Maybe it's a chilled bottle and two glasses.

Maybe it's sparkling water and a handwritten card with your name on it.

Or maybe you walk into your room and discover an entire basket tied up with ribbon containing wine, chocolates, granola, snacks and assorted treats—which immediately makes you feel as though you have won some sort of extremely sophisticated adult treasure hunt.

Is it silly?

Probably.

Do I care?

Absolutely not.

For me, great travel isn't always about staying at the biggest or most expensive hotel.

Sometimes the places you remember most are the ones that make you feel like they were genuinely excited for you to arrive.

A handwritten welcome note makes a difference.

A bottle of local wine suddenly becomes part of the memory of that destination. Locally made chocolates, fresh fruit, pastries from a nearby bakery or a little package of regional treats can introduce you to a place before you've even unpacked your suitcase.

Some hotels go far beyond the traditional bottle of champagne and chocolates, too.

I've heard of properties welcoming guests with everything from locally roasted coffee and handmade macarons to fresh-baked cookies, charcuterie, regional honey, miniature bottles from nearby distilleries and personalized gifts based on something the guest mentioned when booking.

And those are exactly the hotels I want to find.

Not necessarily the obvious five-star property everyone already knows about.

I want the hidden gems.

The boutique hotel tucked into a neighbourhood you almost didn't visit. The family-run inn that puts homemade pastries outside your door in the morning. The little luxury property where someone remembers what you drank the night before. The resort that leaves local treats in your room that you end up desperately trying to find somewhere to buy before flying home.

Those experiences stay with you.
