The moments between the moments

There’s always the photograph everyone sees — the polished one. The perfect light, the beautiful pose, the expression that lands at exactly the right second.

But some of my favorite parts of a photoshoot happen just outside of that frame.

They’re the moments between the moments.

The fixing of a sleeve. The quick look at a phone. Someone rearranging themselves for the hundredth time because we’re trying to find the angle. The slightly ridiculous positions we’ll get ourselves into to make an idea work. The laughter after a pose feels a little too serious. The quiet second before someone realizes I’m already taking the picture.

And, occasionally, lying flat on the floor because apparently that is where the shot requires us to be.

Photography can look very glamorous once the final images are delivered. Behind the scenes? It’s usually a wonderfully imperfect mix of experimenting, adjusting, laughing, moving furniture, chasing light and saying, “Wait — stay right there.”

That’s part of what I love about it.

A photoshoot isn’t really a series of perfectly arranged poses. It’s more like a conversation. We start with an idea, but then the light changes, someone moves differently than expected, a little corner of the room suddenly looks incredible, or a completely unplanned moment ends up becoming the inspiration for the next photograph.

These images are such a perfect reminder of that.

One minute, we’re quietly playing with the shapes and textures around us, figuring out how to use the space. The next, we’re on the floor checking something between shots. And somewhere in between all of that, everything comes together — the styling, the light, the composition, the personalities — and we create the finished image.

That final photograph might feel effortless -

.....Getting there usually isn’t.

And I actually think that’s part of the magic.

I never want a session to feel like you’ve walked into a room, been placed on an invisible X and been told to smile on command. I want there to be room to play. To experiment. To move. To change our minds. To try the strange idea that might work beautifully.

Because very often, it does.

And even when it doesn’t, those few minutes usually lead us somewhere better.

So while I will always love sharing the finished photographs, I have a soft spot for the behind-the-scenes images too. They tell another part of the story — the one filled with movement, creativity, silliness and all of the tiny decisions that happen before the shutter clicks on the one.

The beautiful photograph is the destination.

But the moments in between?

Those are where the memories live.
